This motor is absolutely killing me..everyday I'm out there working on it and everyday it pushes me to my limits..I've read countless forum posts and posted plenty too and asked for advise with always meaningful help that fixes problems but leads me to the next..now everything is working except for the gears..it says selectric on the control box cover that I got with the motor but I've been told its hydroelectric..I can only find 1 number on the motor A0040895 and can't find any others..when I search this number nothing comes up so finding exactly what it is to know exactly what gear selector setup is on it is proving to b a challenge..how can I locate the model??the setup for the gear selector I got off these forums as the original buttons where broken so I fitted an aftermarket headlamp switch off an old model car..when u toggle through the gears with the ignition on u can hear it clicking..if u leave it in fwd and turn ignition on there's no click which leads me to believe its right as they start in fwd..so when I select N and turn ignition on it clicks and when u select the through the gears with ignition on u hear it click very clear..but prop still spins..motor idles and is fine through all rev ranges but no gear select..I've changed oil twice and ran motor for 5min to maybe loosen up things but no good so far.the motor sat for a few years before I got it but started and ran str8 away(after doing the coil).I'm using ATF as cant find oil here without having to order it..what can I do to fix this I'm losing my mind..I read on here that one bloke flushed it with pre mix fuel and it unblocked the lower unit..can this b done or is there anything else I can do..

http://shop.evinrude.com/media/document/ModelNumberReference.pdf

According to this link, Evinrude only made two 55 hp model numbers in 1969........55972 and 55973. You can find them on page 58 of the link. There should be a freeze plug somewhere on the motor block that has the model number and serial number. It took me a bit but I finally found it on my '76 Johnson 25 hp.

Good luck!

Lower unit oil? Milky means that there's water in it. I don't know anything about lower units but I'm sure someone knowledgeable will post more about it.

I would Google those two model numbers and check the schematics on the Selectric Unit. They may be the same on both models.

It's going to need seals done and I'm guessing this water isn't helping my gear selecting problems maybe the water is making it not shift and I need to go into the lower unit either way.. Does any1 have a manual on the lower unit a how to replace seals etc cheers

Milky low end oil means there's water in it. I'm having the same problem with my 1968 18 hp. Can you see the oil leaking out anywhere on the motor? Around the fill/check screws for the oil, or around the prop? Mine doesn't seem to leak if its just sitting there, but if I take it out of the water barrel after running it for a few mins and the motor warms up some, I can see the oil running out around the prop (seal kit is on the way). I'm somewhat new to working on these motors, but if I had to take a guess, I'd say your issue of it not shifting might be related to rust from the water in the low end, but thats just a guess, its not something I've ever dealt with personally. I'm sure some of the more experienced people here will know if thats actually very likely or not.

My kit should get here today. I plan to do a detailed post about the process with alot of pictures in the next day or two, since I haven't found one yet. If you're not in a huge hurry maybe that will help, but it might be a couple days before I'm done with it.

Here are a few pictures I found on here somewhere (cant find the post in my favorites though) that may help too.

Cheers for that..I've taken the box off and there's a broken impeller housing cover and I checked the impeller that's fine too (are they suppose to be rubber and squeeze into place?) from what I see the only way of it leaking is thru that cover..its only had the muffs on it so far

Yes, the impeller is rubber and squeezes into place in the housing, but while you're in there you should replace it anyway, they're cheap. Especially if it was rubbing against a broken housing, I would assume it's damaged. Make sure when you put it into the housing, the fins are going the right way. A whole rebuild kit for mine with the wear plate under the impeller, and a new bushing for the line that pumps the water up into the engine and all that was only 20 something bucks. I don't know anything about the solenoid though.

not sure if you still need help identifying your motor but the tag with your model is located on the transom mount. See attached pics, hope this helps!IMAG0788.jpgIMAG0790.jpg
