That is incorrect the 1969 Evinrude Triumph 55 will start in gear. The safety switch on it is throttle controlled. So you can be in gear and start but it has to be low throttle. I am reading it in a manual as I type this.

Rturn, what manual did you read this in. Sounds like the answer to my question for the '69 Evinrude 55hp. If you have the wiring diagram in your manual can you check to see if this is correct...
>+12 red wire, to vaccum sw (next to choke)

>green wire w/ red stripe to '+' on electric
shift button sw (this would allow it to start in gear like you described. No vaccum = no control power to electric shift buttons if I'm correct.)

>blue wire on reverse sw

>green wire on nuetral sw
(blue and green might be the other way around)

>And when I 'ring out' the button sw. are my findings correct, that pushing the reverse button simultaneously closes the nuetral and the reverse circuit? Can this be right or do I have a bad sw.?

Re: 1969 55hp evinrude ele. shift

The reason for the vacume switch is to retard starting until the hyd. pump has forced the clutch dog out of forward gear. As crankcase vacume rises from cranking, the vacume switch closes the ignition circuit, and the engine starts. I used to test these gearcases by hooking it to a 12 volt battery, and turning the drive shaft with a speed wrench, You would be surprised how little RPM it takes to shift these unit's out of gear. The last of these engines using the hydro-elec. drive did'nt use a vacume switch.

Re: 1969 55hp evinrude ele. shift

I have a very poor copy of what is supposed to be the correct wiring diagram for the 1969 55hp Evinrude model #55973, the right side of which is extremely dark. I can barely make out the words "shif? solen?"at the bottom, which I believ are the shift solenoids, one of which is barely visible, and the words shi? swit? which should be the shift switches?? (Wish I had a scanner!)
Anyways, as far as I can see in this diagram,it looks like +12vdc from battery splits to these 4 devices:
1) + side of brdg rect
2) fuse inline w/ 's' on the key sw
3) starter sol.
4) the vacuum sw.
From the vacuum sw a green wire w/red stripe appears to supply +12vdc to the shift switch.
Is this correct?

And,
When I 'ring out' the button sw. are my findings correct, that pushing the reverse button will simultaneously close the nuetral and the reverse circuit? Can this be right or do I have a bad sw.?

Re: 1969 55hp evinrude ele. shift

Your right! pushing the reverse button energises both solinoids. There is also a blocking diode in this system. It's purpose is when you shut the key off it lets the alternator still supply voltage to the shift solinoids. With out it, the gear case would lurch into forward gear because the power head is still winding down. As before! this gear case is always in forward with the engine at rest. The engine has to be cranking, or running to shift.

Thanks R.Johnson!
Hmmm....Ok I see the blocking diode in the wiring diagram, but this is the only page of the manual I have for now. (manual on the way).

Where is the blocking didode physically mounted?

Re: 1969 55hp evinrude ele. shift

I had a similar problem with my 72 johnson
the switch in the control box was bad SO being the thrifty person that I am here is the solution that I came up with.

with engine off the outboard is in forward gear

the lower unit had two wires soooo I put 12 positive directly to them.

well to shorten the story, I had neutral now, but if I reversed the wires I got reverse.

so having a 15 foot boat i didn't need reverse
I wired it for neutral and installed a push-pull continious on off switch which I pull when I need neutral
It has worked for two years without problems.
