If its insulated going through the body, I'd say its hot..

That side terminal is "hot" in the sense that grounding it kills the spark. If the screw is not properly insulated from the case, you won't get any spark.

Your motor, unless someone has completely changed out the ign, is older than '69. '69 650's had an electronic ign system (Lightning Energizer).

Not that there's anything wrong with a properly serviced magneto!

Re: 1969 65HP Mercury outboard magneto Q

hello again

i have further Q on this ign. sys.

at the rectiophere(sp?) it should be +12V when flywheel spins ?

if my starter spins and engages then then the rectiophier and solenoid are ok ?

how can i check the out put of the magneto ?

Re: 1969 65HP Mercury outboard magneto Q

As long as the start turns the engine over the soliniod is good, the finned rectifier should have an 11 to 1 advantage then tested with a ohmmeter and the stator should test good for continuity. The easiest way is stat the engine with a voltmeter on the battery an see if the thing is charging. We test the mags by puting the on a sun machine that spind then from 0 to 8000 RPM and test each wire for output with a spark gap set at 7/16", mort don't have a sun machine and use 4 sparkplugs with the ground electriod cut off. All most anything will work just as long as the gap and spark are equal

when testing this should i be testing on the coil face and they all beep when i place on lead on one and another on the rest ..

ok i tested the battery when i trun the egn on ..

and the battry level goes from 13V to 11V

... should the spark plugs be wet with gas ?
