Hello All

I have a 1969 6hp Johnson that hadn't run in a couple of years. Last week I put it in a barrel and after a few pulls it started up and ran well in neutral and in gear and the water pump was working. I let it run in gear for 15 minutes with no issues. I did have the cover off the entire time. I turned it off and put the cover back on let it sit in the barrel. I came back today to run it again. I left the lid on it this time. It started right up and ran nice for a few minutes and stalled out. I checked the fuel line and had pressure and seem to be getting gas. I started it several times and would run as long as I left the choke in. Once I push the choke open, it would stall. It did this several times. The only difference between today and last week is I left the cover on today. Any ideas what the problem would be?

Thanks,
Gary

It's not the cover . . . I recently went through this with my 1969 Mercury 7.5 hp that had not been run is about 2 years. It initially started up and ran fine. But the next day it did not want to stay running. . . similar situation that you described.

I attributed the second day troubles to the theory that the first run of the engine loosened a bunch of 'crud' in the carburetor and that was messing things up (sorry for all the technical terms :D ). It seemed that I could get the engine to run at a high idle or even mid-range throttle, but nothing in the idle range.

Soooo, I mixed up about 1 gallon of 2-cycle mix and Seafoam 2 fuel to 1 Seafoam. A carb/injector cleaner would do the same as the Seafoam, in case you have a preference. I got the engine running at a high idle by starting it in reverse and ran the engine under load with the 'Seafoam cocktail' until it was all gone.

The engine seemed to be its old self after having the carb cleaned by the Seafoam . . . I switch over to regular 2-cycle mix and made a final carb adjustment. The engine now works well.

So, maybe try cleaning that carb out with an intoxicating dose of fuel system cleaner or Seafoam. :thumb:

I agree with tpenfield. I had the same problem with my 6 h.p. Evinrude after it sat a few years when I bought it. It ran fine the first time I started it, after that, it ran with my choke half closed, but it would not troll at all, it would just stall at low RPM's. It was the carburator. I cleaned it out a few times & it helped a little bit. Then I finally rebuilt it with an OEM carb kit & soaked the carb in a solvent overnight, and it runs like a brand new motor now. Clean your carb and soak it in a solvent while you have it apart. It will work much better than the seafoam (which by the way, I always use in my fuel tank with my gas & oil mix).
