Are you running it where? They won't run in a barrel with the hood on. If on a boat, they are notorious for exhaust smoke inhalation. There are several famous reasons for it. Cure depends on the cause (or causes)

I have just read past responses to this issue. They are mostly from 10 years ago. Exhaust leak seems to be the most popular explanation. Some say they cut holes in the cowling to allow for more airflow. One says make a scoop air hole.

If it is exhaust leak. Then cutting holes sounds like putting off the real issue.

If anyone has had success with the cutting of holes how many years did you get out of the motor before you had to deal with the alleged exhaust leak?

I can't answer the question concerning cutting holes because I never did it. Money earned by fixing the exhaust leaks helped feed my family.

Thanks All for responding. i think I will try to put it on some water......if Alberto doesn't mess things up!

i'm just south of Tallahassee and I like to put in at the light house on St Marks River.. I'll will wait til Tuesday. Alberto might be gone. I know it runs really good with cowl off. But I will take a trusty 4 hp Evinrude with me for back up..

The holes in the cowl will probably last as long as the motor does. IE: blown power head or lower unit. I've done it and it does work.
