I have had my motor for a few years now. Had problems with it so I took it to a guy and he put a carb kit in it. It ran great before I took it home. 2 weeks later I put it in some water and tried to run it and it was sputtering and would only run(kinda) with full choke, and I could only keep it running for a minute or so. Now it is sitting at the guys house who worked on it with him scratching his head on what the problem is. He can keep it running but its just not right. He swears it is a carb problem but he has had it apart several times and cleaned every crevise and still cant get it. He described it to me as it almost acts like it is running on one cylinder, but it is running on both. Luckily for me he is a great honest guy and is not charging me a dime unless he fixes it.

So my question is: First: Has anyone had a similar problem or have any idea what it could be??? Second: how much could I sell it for the way it is?

Check compression numbers, and check spark w/tester.. 1/4" blue bolt needed per cylinder.

Here's a couple of things that have happened to me with the same motor; Like Kbait says, make absoltuely certain you have good spark on both cylinders (and the right plugs), next, the "link and synch" on that motor is difficult to explain but if you mention it to your guy, he can probably figure it out. It's vitally important to be adjusted correctly. Next, your carb is a downdraft model which is suseptable to small things dropping into it and holding a reed valve open. I found some tiny "seeds" from an old mouse nest in mine, removed them and ended the problem. Might pay to remove the carb again and have a look at the reeds. Are the plug wires old and brittle? If so, consider replacing them to.

Thanks for the responses. He said it had good compression and actually checked for spark with me there and it was good also. The spark plugs are only a year and a half old and only ran a few times. I will say something to him about the reeds and see what he has to say, thanks!

Ok so, the guy cleaned and checked everything in the carb again, checked and cleaned the reeds and doubled checked spark and compression. all was good. I ordered another carb off ebay for cheap and tried that also...no change. we took the hose off the carb to see if plenty of gas was going to it and had a nice stream and was good. There is some problem with gas going through the carb and we cant figure it out. It runs great when we run it while dropping gas into the carb so I guess there must not be enough vacuum or something pulling that gas through the carb.

Any other ideas??? I'm really wanting to get it running nice again to sell instead of selling it running bad.

Got it running great again! Turns out the high speed jet was really clogged up and carb cleaner alone was not enough to clean it. had to run a pick through it to get the gunk out. Now it purrs like a kitten!:D

I shutter when shadetree mechanics say they cleaned the carb, by running carb cleaner thru it. They need to be torn down & done right.

So what was wrong with carb #2 ?

Possibly a link to what I consider the best 9.9 site will help :D Thanks to the machinist :D

Everyone needs to read this regardless if it is a 9.5 or 9,9 OMC 9.9 - 15hp

Strangly enough, the exact same thing. it ran great on the motor after cleaning it also and since I got it so cheap I just paid him with carb #2. Im pretty mechanicly inclined so I will be doing most of my own work from here on out. I know the guy has been doing it for 35 years but I agree with you and thanks to this website and manuels, if I dont know how to do it right I can find out pretty easy
