ok thanks for the advice. should I try to make a v brace bc how I have it right now it on 2 rail road timbers and tires in the front the timbers keeps the back still and stable so maybe building a brace for the front would work just as well.

Slight deformation of the hull under your weight while in the boat can change the way it goes back together if you glass the deformation in or it throws your measurements off....

^^sure agree with that. Will add that the '56 Lark you pictured over in the J and E section (think it's a '56) has a long shaft. I can't tell what your transom height is, but needs to measure out to 20" if you are going to use the long shaft motor -- that's top center of the transom, down to the bottom of the hull (not the bottom of the keel, if there is one). Maybe that's what you have.

Anything 18-21 or so is a long shaft transom, often they werent exactly 20in.

Oh and its measured vertically along the plane the motor would hang, not flat along the angle of the transom...

See reference in #3 to a '59 Fastwin, so maybe that's not a l.s. model. Agree with JB re. actual measurements, as with reg transom measurements. But not sure what you will be needing.

when I get the boat repaired I'm gonna add on this 18 hp evinrude golden jubilee fastwin it needs a lower unit seal kit but should get that done before the boat is. the transom hight is around 22 inches and the fastwin is aprox 1 1/4 inchs off being lined up so ill make a little spacer for the top of the transom to line the boats bottom right up.

Pretty motor, and will be a nice rig. Now's the time to consider transom height. Not sure I followed your plan, but motor looks like a regular shaft (about 15-17 inches, from the mounting point to the top of the a.v. plate.)

its around 23 I believe that's an older picture I had I believe it has a modified lower end bc it has an extension section like a spacer my grandfather put on it. from what ik it ran but the lower was leaking oil other than that I don't realy know mutch about its previous work or condition. and as for the transom I dant really have a large enough garage with the things that are stored for winter. tractors, bikes, motors ect. or I would be working on the transom but this snow finally came and I wish it would leave already lol

5in extension kit made a short shaft mid-section a long shaft mid. Dont know off hand what it made the length of that particular model 18hp Evinrude, but for sure no longer a short shaft....

Any chance Gramps kept the driveshaft and water tube to put it back to short shaft? Nice to have, even if not now or for the Alpex.

if he did I wouldn't know he moved to texas a few years ago and took everything with him when he passed my gram and my cousin cleaned the garage out and sent me a book collection and some boating motors tanks ect bc I'm the only one who is interested in boating. he also has a 90 hp evinrude unsure of model or age tho I didn't get the other shaft but that doesn't mean its not hidden in the back of the shed down there.?

The Lark in the other pic has an extension. I'm not sure, but possible the '56 30hp shaft and housing extension might fit the 18 (JB might know for sure). Maybe a possibility, anyway. Think you have a couple of '56 long shaft models. Driveshafts and splines would have to match up. Anyway, something to consider.

I don't think I've cut down a transom -- maybe can be done without issues. And maybe grandpa's parts will show up yet before Spring.

(a little snow in NY, as you say. think JB's got more in WVA, though. My son in DC is getting more than they can handle tonight.)

[ed. took another look at the '56 Lark -- 5" extension looks like it might belong to the Fleetwin, so maybe that's where it went.]

no the lark and big twin bot do have extensions as well but they were made long shafts. the fastwin was a short shaft but he recently made it into a ling shaft with an extension shaft and shift rod from idk where. either way the fastwin is now a tad longer from fin to mount for my current transom so instead of making my transom a inch or so bigger ill just make a wooden spacer to go on top of the new transom between the mount and transom that way I can still use my 10 hp Clinton without the spacer if on a smaller lake or pond
