Hello,

I am trying to find out if a lower unit from a 1969 55hp Johnson will bolt up to a 1972 60hp Johnson. Both are hydro-electric shift units.

Many thanks,

George

I think they should fit?

I'm sure they will bolt up but I'm not sure about the shift pattern. I know the 70 thru 72 electric shift models default to forward gear. This lets you have forward if the solenoids fail. But I'm not sure about the earlier models. Maybe Mr. D or one of the other guys will set us straight.

Welcome RR!!

In 1972 the 3 cylinder motor was a 65 hp. The 3 cylinder 60's were in 70 & 71. Any of those should interchange with your 68/69 55. Just make sure its not a 1973 65 hp. That was a mechanical shift. Make sure it has the same spline on the driveshaft as yours. It should be but sometimes folks get things mixed up when they're trying to sell.

Thanks very much for the feedback fellows. And thanks for the Welcome!

I apologize for the error in my post. The engine in question is indeed a 1971 60Hp, not a 1972. Of course Dhadley is absolutely right that in 72 they were 65hp. I need to look closer before I submit.

I'm happy to report that my new-used lower unit from that 55hp is now bouncing along in a UPS truck from Michigan to Maryland's eastern shore. It looks like I'll have it in plenty of time to install it before my Dad arrives on the 5th for his annual visit and fishing trip. This one was important as last year he was critically ill and couldn't make it. When your fishing buddy is 78 years old you don't want to disappoint them or miss out on that time with them.

Thanks again,

George

You're sure right about that. I took my 80-year-old dad fishing earlier this year. He's still hale and hearty, but who knows?

Take your kids and parents fishing now. Tomorrow could be too late.

Thanks very much again for the help.

I'm glad to report that my dad's visit went very well. We went out five times and put 420 nice3 white perch and 33 nice cats into the freezer. My dad is 78 years old but he was gigling and laughing like a kid.
