What does the forward flat head screw on the right front portion of the LU do? I'm not talking about the drain or fill/vent for gear oil. I'm talking about the one on the forward right portion of the bullet shape area forward of the prop. It has threads next to the head and a smooth long shaft at the end. I have removed it and put a new o-ring on it but that broke and some gear oil was leaking from it post lake trip. I ended up pulling it out and using a real gasket and now it's sealed. My question is what does that smooth shaft ride against from the screw? Also should that section have gear oil preset or does it mean a seal is bad between it and another wet zone inside the drive? Thanks for any info!

I think I have found a post regarding this pin screw and how it holds the shift fork. I didn't move it so I'm ok. I will monitor and make sure I don't get a drip. I'm still curious if it is a dry area or wet area with regards to gear oil in that area?

If you did not shift or move the motor while the pin was out you should be okay. There is a special seal for that which comes with a lower unit seal kit. Normally once it is installed you never have to remove it. If this did not go back in correctly you will notice your gear housing will get stuck in gear or in neutral. If this happens you will have to disassemble the lower unit in order to fix it. To do this you will need a seal kit and a decent manual or parts break down of the lower unit so you can see how it all goes back together. The correct part is called a NYLTITE WASHER and the part number was F8001 but is no longer available.
