I recently picked up a 1969 Evinrude 40HP Big Twin with a clamp-on transom mount. One side of the clamp-on ears is broken. I would like to replace the whole clamp-on mount with a bolt on mount. Is this possible and if so what replacement part do I need? Thanks.

Those are called stern brackets. Not sure what you mean by "ears" though. Anyway, what you have is what you can have. There are no bolt-on brackets like the larger motors have.

EDIT: However---there are more secure parts for mounting it. They were used on the electric shift motors because they had a nasty way of twisting themselves off the transom. But the same parts can be used on your Big Twin.

Go to http://shop.evinrude.com/ click on Electronic Parts Catalog, then navigate to the 1969 Selectric shift Long shaft model 40973R, then to the "Lower Unit Group". In the inset box you will see the extra mounting parts which include a transom plate, and more importantly a clamp (#87) part number 309193 that bolts to the transom. Then the pads at the bottom of the stern brackets slip in behind the clamp. It is not necesary to remove the clamp to remove and reinstall the motor.

Re: 1969 Evinrude 40HP Clamp-on Transom Mount Broken

Thanks F_R. I've located a replacement strbd side stern bracket at a local boat salvage yard.....and I'll definitely install a bolt-on transom clamp. I was worried about the torque on a 40 HP outboard with only clamp-on mounts.
