1969 Evinrude 85 hp electric shift lower unit pre-installation test

Need to replace my son's electric shift lower unit<br />which he just damage on rocks, I have a few of these old lower units, how can I test one to be sure it is working properly before installation?<br />Thanks

Lots of these gearcases can't be checked prior to installation,because they are oil pump driven,and have to be running.<br /><br />But generally you'll see 5.5 to 6.5 ohms between each lead and the housing (10 to 13 between both leads)<br /><br />DHP

I've tested them before with jumper cables from a battery and a large electric drill. You can hear the solenoids when you power them up, but the drill on the driveshaft will tell you if its getting the gears like it should. Take the impellor out for the test. Makes it easier to turn the driveshaft.

Did I leave ot these readings are on the wires going to the lower unit ?<br /><br />YES
