Ive been having some problems with my 1970 20 hp johnson outboard that i bought this summer with a tinny. I was out on the nearby lake one day and as i started to accelerate in forward the outboard kicked back into neutral. I know i have a problem with the gear and the clutch dog. I was wondering what othe year lower units would work for my 1970 because i found a 1967 but dont know if it would work for it. My other question is if its possible to get to the clutch dog without buying the expensive epuipment and if so how???

That lower unit is the easyest of all to work on, splits horizontial. Just be sure to seal it properly, when assembling. Dont know what years will fit, but a wide range of the 20 and 25 will, up to 74, i think.

That style lower unit was introduced in 1949, on the Johnson QD-10 and 1950, on the Evinrude Fastwin 14hp. It was in production, on the 25hp Johnyrude till 1976. There have been changes made on it through the years, but has remained the same basic design for 27 years. Clutch dogs for your year of motor should be pretty much the same, from the late 50's all the way through your era, but just make sure you check your parts dealer for the part numbers and compatibility years. For your 1970 Johnson 20hp, you should be easily covered from 1966 - 1976 as far as being the same design of lower unit. The earlier ones had a slight difference in the mold for the halves. I believe the 1966 model, they did away with the ridges at the seam and made them smoothe. Requardless of that though, you can take the lower unit off of a 1957 18hp and put it on your 1970 20hp and it'll work fine. There is a possibility that the inner parts may be different, but I doubt it. I see the part numbers are different, from 1955 to 1966, but it doesn't necessarily mean the part is different. To be sure, just order the part by your year and you'll be safer.:D

Thanks for the help. To get inside the lower unit to the clutch dog do you have to take the whole lower unit apart or is it possible to take off the pin and the prop and get all the way back to the clutch dog without disassembling the whole lower unit?

It will be cheaper to get a used lower unit than buying parts as BomB has went crazy with pricing, cradle $74 and dog $67. I just gave a customer back his unit as I could not charge him for what lower unit needed in repair, cause it was more than he gave for whole rig. Gave him parts list and photo copies of service manual to repair hisself...

You have to remove the lower unit and split the gearcase at the skeg.

If you want to you can take the mtr off the boat, drain the oil and turn it upside down. Then you can split the skeg and get at all the gears and ect. You'll have to have it upside to work on it anyway. Done it many times.

Drop the lower unit. It takes 10 min max to undo the 5 bolts and shifter...
