Hi all,
I have a 33hp jonhson. When i bought it, it was starting/running oke, but only the impeller was broken so i shut it off and replaced the impeller. When busy with the lower unit i also noticed that there was water inside the lower gearcase and replaced all seals. After i put the engine together again it was running for a few seconds and after that is not running anymore.
The battery is full, fuel is oke, carb is clean, fuelpump oke, spark's oke (nice bleu spark, timing oke, both sparks getting fuel. The only thing i notice is that the lower cilinder spark is very wet. So what do i miss here?? Maybe the temp outside, it's here now + 3 degrees celcius???

Although I have the same question as DHPMarine, I don't think the flywheel key can be blamed. Usually that results in weak or no spark on that engine since the cam isn't connected to it.
Check spark. Make sure it'll jump an 8mm gap off each lead, especially the bottom one.
The fuel pump ought to be mounted to the upper intake bypass cover. Is it?
Compression still good? Often after an overheat the head gasket will sometimes blow. How bad did it overheat?

The engine should fire fine below 0. If you don't believe me, click my "man-next-to-house" icon. :)

Thanx for the quick reply, yes correct the fuel pump is connected to the upper cilinder.
About the flyweel key, i will check saturday when i recieve my "puly puller" to take off the flyweel. I wanted to check the breaker points any how. The spark clearance i don't know realy so thats what i will check out tomorow. First i take a good sleep now to dream about it. It's here midnight now.

After i noticed that there was no water i stopped it after a few second's/minute's. But i remember that the cilinders where not that hot. Before i bought it i don't know. How can i check the compression, i don't have a meter to measure it. It's hard to pull by hand starter so i think compresion enough.
By the way when your are starting the engine is it normal thats there also (exhaust?)air coming out of the water outlet??

At least one of the items you list as okay isn't, Eric.

"was running for a few seconds and after that is not running anymore." suggests fuel supply trouble.

Go to Engine FAQs and do the troubleshooting there. Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

That's normal. At idle exhaust escapes through the water outlet. Once you're going, most the exhaust goes out through the fin behind the propeller. But at idle, it can't push it's way down there.

You must use the correct puller for the flywheel. The right one will have three bolts that screw into the flywheel. The type that have arms that grab the outside rim of the flywheel will destroy it.
Re: 1970 33hp johnson not starting

Problem solved.
Once i popped the flyweel i saw that the 2 coils where broken and bleeding. So changed the two coils, readjusted the two breakpoints and now it's running again. Only need a little bit small carb adjustmend wich i will do at the lake tomorrow.
Thanx eveybody with the info.

What do you mean by "bleeding?" If you see any gas/oil up there, then ur upper seal needs to be replaced.

Eric, those coils often crack from age alone. But by your description it sounds like +12 volts from the cranking system has somehow gotten into the ignition system. Make sure there's no possible way 12 volts can possibly contact the two black stop switch wires coming from the outboard. Often it's caused by using the wrong key switch.
