Hello..

I need to know what gas / oil mix I should use on my Evinrude 40hp 40072A, Lark Outboard.
I have been filling up at my local Marina with their own mix...and I think my engine is a bit too smokey from this Marine Gas they sell to me. Plus its way more expensive than it should be,, so I want to mix my own using gas from my Petro Canada Gas Station/OR a Shell Station and outboard 2 stroke oil....but what mix is best for say a 20 ltr container..??? and what is the best octane to buy for my 1970 Evinrude...Regular or Premium..? and what about this Ethanol stuff is that OK in a 1970 outboard..??

I might seem a bit dumb with all this but...but I have not had to mix my own before...and it seems a bit complicated with modern gas, in old engines, etc and I don't want to ruin my motor.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Derek BC Canada

You probably find your own gas will smoke just as much as the marina's gas. Might as well face it, it was made that way. You can cut down on the smoke considerably by using 100% synthetic TC-W3 oil. But then the price goes up again. At least the syn is bio-degradeable, which helps one to feel better.

The Ethanol war is still raging, no truce in sight. But that's all we can get around here without going to a lot of trouble. Hasn't hurt my motors, new or old.

You may need to replace a lot of the rubber/neoprene components of the fuel system to cope with the Ethanol in the gas.

But after 42 years they need replacing anyway. No big deal
