Hello, I have a 1970 40HP Johnson (40EL70A) and would like to know if anyone had any idea where I could find replacements for the lower front & rear cowling seals? The part numbers in my motor's manual are #313178 (lower rear cover seal) and #313177 (lower front cover seal). Any type of suggestion or idea on what to use if I can't get the appropiate seals would be appreciated. Thank You Jake362

313177 is still listing on ishopmarine.com but is superceded. I would assume that means that Evinrude dealers can still provide the newer replacement as well.

If you go to www.evinrude.com and go to brp's web site they have a feature in the parts and accessories section that is entitled engine diagrams. This will give you all the part numbers and availabilty in the view parts catalogue. If you go to the view products window a drop down menu will appear and you can pick your model year and model number. A diagram will show up as well as a parts listing. You will find all the info you need.

This also works for omc stern drives and johnson outboards as well.

Hope this also helps.

Both seals went to PN 313173. Cut to fit on the rear seal. Expensive from BRP at $35/seal....

Would make a body look around a bit.

I was looking for the same thing for my '71 40HP but didn't want to pay $30.

Coleman

Nymarine.ca is now carrying the seal in black. It's a little different from the late 60s/early 70s one but who cares? It seems to me it's a lot like the early 60s seal. $18 Canadian for 3' of it, and I think you need about 6.
I searched for this seal for quite some time and entertained the idea of having a short run of it manufactured. The price he's listing appears very fair to me.

I bought a can of rubberized spray liner. Plan on taking the original seal and trying to build up the damaged spots, if possible. Mine is not too badly damaged, so maybe this will get me by until I can justify finding a new one. I have been watching eBay as sometimes parts on there show up for this model

Coleman

I saw where someone used the gasket material for auto trunk lids. Looked good and they said it fit great.

Thanks! That sounds like it might work. Anything would be an improvement of what I have on there now. Thanks again  Jake362
