Has anybody run into this issue. Currently no spark due to a bad cd unit. Just spent $800 having a mechanic install a cd unit on my outboard. After 6 trips out...again no spark. I narrowed it down to the cd unit that was just replaced. I really do not want to buy another one for $400. Why would an outboard go through cdi units? I have seen where owners switch over to automotive ignition. I pulled the marine cd unit and coil off and installed a 12v automotive coil with internal resistor and attached a condenser to the distributor. I also put in marine spark plugs that have the electrode (not the round type). The stock electrical system on my outboard consists of stator, trigger, cd unit, coil and belt driven distributor with points. With automotive ignition it starts up fine and runs decent. When I push the throttle to 80% for more .... a minute or 2 later the engine's rpms decrease and the engine shuts off. I put the boat in neutral and start the engine and it starts right up again. Same thing. Ok at 50 percent throttle, but as soon as I go 80% throttle for a minute or two the engine revs down and shuts off. Anybody know how I can keep the automotove ignition parts and have it run 80% or more throttle without shutting down? Impeller is fine...motor spits out water. I also replaced the entire fuel system, ie. hoses, fittings, rebuilt fuel pump and rebuilt all 3 carbs. Thank you for your help.

When shuts down check if you have a spark issue or fuel issue.
Put an inline fuel filter after the pump and before the carbs.
This will help you to see if it is a electrical issue or fuel issue.
