Re: 1970 evinrude 55hp wont shift

Thanks to everyone, i appreciate the help. I had it in the water and it does turn in neutral the same as in forward. It moves the boat at the same speed. So Im going with with Schematics last choice because I've tried the electrical and every other test. Im not sure what type C smells like, but the oil in there smells like 80w90 that I sell at the auto parts house.Im hoping a good oil flush and change tkes care of it.If not, anybody got a good hydro-electric lower unit?

Thanks again everyone, Sterny

Well pertaining to electrically all i can tell you now is make sure it is in fact the green wire that has power to it when your in neutral and not the blue wire as joe stated.

Re: 1970 evinrude 55hp wont shift

I took the boat out saturday with trnny fluid in the lower unit. Within 5 seconds i had neutral. The prop still spins, but some or all exhaust comes out some what down there, i dont know. Anyway, i had it at half throttle and made one pass on the lake. Loading it back up it went from forward to neutral and reverse with ease, but it still spins in neutral, the boat just dont move until you put it in gear. it just dont spin very fast, and i didnt wait very long, maybe it quits completely like Texas Heat said.I changed the oil back to type c which I found out i can get at work at Advance Auto. So I think im up and running. Just in time for cold weather. Oh well, now I can concentrate on cosmetics and keep an eye on the old evinrude. Thanks everyone, Im sure Ill come up with another good one to solve sometime. See ya in the classifieds. Sterny
