yea bilge pump a weird deal.. that one actually goes out below the water line, I think it may have been used as a wash down pump or maybe a live well.. there is one up on the transom that is supposed to have a hose down to the bilge.. thanks..

Re: 1970 Starcraft.. a Vision...

I'm located in southern Oregon, usually fish out of the Port of Brookings. I'll say 90% of my running will be in the ocean. I plan to do a quality restore at a reasonable cost. If I can get the 165 squared away and a good compression test I'd like to keep it. That will save some cash for other goodies. I am shooting for a 5K budget unless I need to replace the motor.
I think the transom has been replaced and will do a better inspection when I clean out the area, My initial thoughts are, replace the floor and foam, move the batteries forward, relocate fuel tank forward and under the deck, make the rear seats go away and replace with removable bass boat type seats. Build storage pedestals under the front seats, and place some rear facing seats up front behind the others. Drop down the center of the floor in the cabin if possible, a sink, dining table that makes into a bed, and storage.
My largest expense may be the aluminum hard top I'd like to have made, along with the seat pedestals and engine cover. River Marine boat builders is close by and I hope to catch them in the off season and make a package deal for some aluminum work.
In riding in a friend Chieftain, it seemed real tail heavy, and hard to get on plane.. suggestions?? trim tabs?
The trailer is in good condition, it was converted to a roller trailer, hope this is ok for riveted boats. That's the basics.. Thanks for your input..

W/out more info about your friend's Chief, it'll be tough to suggest why it's 'tail heavy & hard to get on plane'.

I don't think Chem's Chief (most recent to be splashed & used several times since, I think) is difficult/slow to plane, it's an OB not an I/O. I think he's also at the low end of the hp range, so if it'll still get up & go fairly well not sure what's going on w/ your friend's boat, specifically.

Top 3 possibilities:
Poorly performing motor (or incorrect prop, possibly both)
Underpowered
Water below decks

Trim tabs wouldn't help ^^^, mask the problem, perhaps....

agree with JB on likely issues with friend's chief. seems like waterlogged underdeck foam is the norm, not the exception. and on the trim tabs just being a bandage. coming out of Oregon inlets, sodden "flotation" foam is not a small matter and should be addressed....you have what, an hour or so in that water before the hypothermia claims you?

Drop down the center of the floor in the cabin if possible, a sink, dining table that makes into a bed, and storage.

that is the common factory arrangement for at least Starchiefs. i'll find some pix of the cabin area in mine.

Sounds like you have a good budget and established a plan or what I call a vision of what's to come. My fuel tanks will be under the seats at the helm and the batteries right behind them.....building seat boxes so no pedestals. I like to keep the weight forward also as it seems every tin I owned was extremely light in the front. A budget is nice as a guide to help keep expenses in check. Unfortunately my budget went way out the window.....

Looking forward to seeing your project progress.

budget? Whats a budget? is that dollar amount you tell your wife when you buy the boat then hide all the extra money you end up spending?
