I was going to re-paint my father's old mid 70's Springbok 12.5' aluminum boat, as it could use it. Anyone have any suggestions as to the red colour would be similar too at Canadian Tire or elsewhere? Or where you could purchase the actual paint?

Another question pops into mind... the Springbok decal. Anyone know of after-market decals to buy a new one?

Springbok logo

Fiberglass or Aluminum?

This is a semi-vee, bench seat, jon boat type boat?

Do you have a pix that shows the red you're after? You will probably need to find a Canadian supplier for the paint system you intend to use & find a color that is 'close enough'. Finding the Springbok paint code & getting an custom blended red paint off the shelf may be tough.

A few Springbok threads @iboats but the info is thin, and as your post a year ago shows, not a lot of active threads for them either.
Looking forward to seeing a pix & welcome to the dry dock, even if it's just for paint.

Thanks for the decal link.

It is a bench seat type aluminum boat. Fairly common for the mid 70's. I was hoping for a 'close enough' match, if I could find one.

I was able to buy some Tremclad "Regal Red" from Canadian Tire which was a close as damn is to swearing. It was orange before (my father's paint job), now this regal red colour. I power washed it off and then sanded it down, before painting. The two pic's attached are of before and after. I should have taken the before picture before I power washed and sanded, as it doesn't look too different, but it needed the paint job. Now it's the original light blue inside that should be done.

I still believe these 1970's Springbok 12.5's to be the best small aluminum boat on the market. Compared to the Starcraft SeaScamp that I have (which is 11'9"); the side walls are higher on the Springbok and it is also lighter. The SeaScamp is well built, the lapstrake aluminum very nice, but it is heavier and doesn't plane out as well or as easy, but also doesn't need to be that heavy.

How did you prep the surface prior to painting? What did you use to apply the Paint"

As I said, I power washed it off first and then sanded it down and wiped it clean. Used an ordinary paint brush, thought the fellow at CT said a foam brush would be better (it would leave less brush lines?), but the regular seemed to work fine.

Just and FYI, In order for Paint to adhere properly to Bare Aluminum it requires the use of Self Etching Primer. It's best to first Acid wash the boat with a mild acid wash. Most people use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Then wash with hot soapy water to neutralize the acid. then apply the SE primer. Then the Paint. When applying over existing paint it's good to sand with 180 grit then wipe down with Acetone and apply the appropriate primer and then the final color coats. The key to any successful paint job is in the prep.
Hopefully your paint will stay stuck for a while since you applied it over pre existing paint.
