I needed a project and got one for free from a "friend". 17' with a 100 HP 1971 Johnson. Last owner says power pack went outand he came in (7 years ago on half of his cylinders).

1. Is this motor worth replacing power pack (after checking compression of course).
2. Should I check for the resistance problems that may have caused power pack burnout prior putting power pack on. I think its 280$ for this boat!!!

3. How do I get the darn thing in neutral. I am a fair to middlin mechanic and 2 strokes are pretty simple but I know squat about how these transmissions work.

Any advice greatly appreciated

landlubber5,

in order to get this motor in neutral you will have to crank the flywheel while shifting it into neutral. this will help you disengage the clutch
hope this helps

How ya' doin' landlubber....

These engines are a little bit of a dinosaur but don't run bad when tuned in.

No spark on one side? Dosen't mean the pack is bad. There are a set of points under the flywheel, one set for each side. Could be these are bad.

The engine is in gear because it's an electric shift and will stay in gear until the motor is running. With the motor running, the neutral solenoid will energize and put the gear case in neutral.

If not sure how to test all this 'junk out, get a service manual and go to it. OEM manual is best for this. Or take it to a good mech for evaluation and price.

Good Luck!

Re: 1971 100 HP Johnson

Thanks for the encouragement. I had figured out where the distributor was already but am waiting for the manual before I dig any deeper (like taking off the flywheel).

Once I get the thing started it will shift into neutral? I need that manual as the shifting/acceleration mechanism was pretty jammed up. I took it apart and there are some things in there I do not understand. Ok of course it can be traced and a mechanical part of it goes to the carb-that part I understand although I don't think there is near enough throw at the motor.

There is a toggle for the power trim and I see a hydraulic pump but cant see the piston, now that is a goober problem, it has to be housed inside the casing that attaches to the boat somewhere if I have one.

I know the power pack is bad because all of those wires had rotted out. THey were the only wires in that kind of shape for some reason. I bought a compression tester today, what the heck thats half the reason for having a project like this so I can buy more toys for the toy heh.

Again any ideas appreciated thanks.

Man you're close to me. I'm buy John Marshall HS. If you want I can come by and take a look at your motor. I'm not a certified wrench but I've worked on a bunch of them.

The 71's have points, expensive ones. The 72's have the sensor to fire the pack.

Walker that would be greatly appreciated. If you looked on my profile you saw that my boating experience has been with friends or on my own Catamaran (does not have a motor) I am more into fishing as I grow older.-e-mail me at liberal5@yahoo.com
