I took the prop of a 71 25 hp sportster, when iI look at the prop shaft that goes into the bullet It looks like a stainless steel washer,I tried to gentley tap it off,but cant.I looked on line to look at the diagram and it shows a rubber o ring ! I dont understand this. Any help would be cool,Thanks in advance. This is my first question and I hope I displayed it in the right place.

The O ring sits in a groove around the bearing head to make the seal between it and the gear case. You wont see it just by taking the prop off. I reckon what you think is a washer is in fact the front (back ??) of the bearing head itself.

I guess you looked at the parts diagram online zoom in to maximum and I think you will see what i mean

all that holds that prop on is the cotter key, and the cone (prop nut). the prop should slide off, probably rusted to the shaft.

He has taken the prop off. He is looking at what is behind it!

Should be a hole thru the shaft for the drive (shear) pin and behind that is a steel washer that has a small dia on the inside that fits into the gear head assy. The large dia o-ring is the seal for the head assy to the gear case. If you see this you have way too much taken apart.

Would be interested to know what prompted this thread.

That is correct. The stainless steel washer is part of the gearcase head and bearing assembly, and not a separate part. That is why you cannot "tap it off", as you said you tried to do. If you look closer at the parts list you will notice that the shaft seal is not a separate part either. The gearcase head and bearing assembly includes the seal and that stainless washer.

The purpose of the stainless washer is to keep fish line and trash out of the seal. It also prevents a broken drive pin from eating away at the seal area.
