Hi guys, I just recently purchased a 1971 60 H.P. Evinrude Model 60173 E that has been converted to automotive ignition (coil, etc). At the time of purchase, the engine had no spark.
Since the motor had been sitting about a year, I emptied all the fuel in the tank and cleaned it out, replaced the fuel with fresh fuel and my 50:1 mix.
Purchased a new coil, battery and it fired right up.
The motor is "popping" and has a rough idle.
I removed all three carbs and opened the bowls, they were pretty clean, nothing really noticeable. The top bowl seemed as if it was dry. So I cleaned it up good and put them back on the engine.
Fired it up again and still popping and rough idle.
I spray carb cleaner in the bottom carb and it seems to rev up and the popping goes away for a few seconds, but returns.

Now, I'm new to being a boat owner, and these things to me are foreign :)

Is there a process of elimination to determine the cause?
Any ideas on what it may be?

I have some thoughts, but really have no "real" idea when it comes to outboards.

Thanks in advance

I'm sort of surprised that it runs as good as it does. Let us know if you get that car ignition system to work properly. I've yet to hear anybody say it has. Nevertheless, sneezing at idle generally means it is running too lean. You probably have tried adjusting the slow speed needles, haven't you? A couple of other things can cause lean idle. One is the carburetor throttle plates opening too soon (in relation to spark timing). There is another related but similar condition where the spark timing is too far advanced in relation to the carb plates. That can be caused by too wide breaker point gap setting. (Back to the ignition system). So, check link & sync and check points setting, should be .009" And let us know......

Ok, so... lol I went out there and adjusted the slow speed needles :)
Not popping as bad.. Instead of popping every 5 seconds, its at least waiting to pop every 60 - 90 seconds now.
All the plates are lined up.. I don't have a spark plug socket, so can't check the plugs, but I believe the plugs are set at .03"

By the way, will not having an air silencer cover on this thing make a difference?

When I spoke of the points, I was referring to the breaker points in the distributor, under the flywheel. The silencer affects the performance, but not by much. However the 3 low speed needles are supposed to be linked together, which helps keep them from spinning from vibration. I suppose all that linkage is missing too??? Or not??

Yeah, nothing attached to the low speed needles at all. They are just sticking out. I don't have the silencer or anything that attaches to the front of the carbs.

Here is a video of the popping.. I took a pic of the front of the carbs, waiting for it to load.. Do you have a pic of how all the carb needles are held together?

Here is the front of what it looks like with just the air silencer removed. Am I missing anything?
