Hi guys, I just recently purchased a 1971 60 H.P. Evinrude Model 60173 E that has been converted to automotive ignition (coil, etc). At the time of purchase, the engine had no spark.
Since the motor had been sitting about a year, I emptied all the fuel in the tank and cleaned it out, replaced the fuel with fresh fuel and my 50:1 mix.
Purchased a new coil, battery and it fired right up.
The motor is "popping" and has a rough idle.
I removed all three carbs and opened the bowls, they were pretty clean, nothing really noticeable. The top bowl seemed as if it was dry. So I cleaned it up good and put them back on the engine.
Fired it up again and still popping and rough idle.
I spray carb cleaner in the bottom carb and it seems to rev up and the popping goes away for a few seconds, but returns.
Now, I'm new to being a boat owner, and these things to me are foreign
Is there a process of elimination to determine the cause?
Any ideas on what it may be?
I have some thoughts, but really have no "real" idea when it comes to outboards.
Thanks in advance
