The threads on my gear housing are marginal from the bearing carrier and nut being pushed out one winter when it wasn't winterized properly. Have any of you experts drilled and tapped set screws into the l/u and the bearing carrier? To keep the nut and carrier in permanent place. I really don't want to put a lot of $$$$ in this old outboard.  :( :( ;)

Re: 1971 850 85 HP Bearing carrier question

The last time I saw this was on a 135 hp. The problem we ran into was that the torque spec for the brg carrier is very high. We felt that it would just tear what was left of the threads out.

We replaced the case with a used one.

On the other hand...you could try to use a new ring nut and see how tight you can get it. Or take it to a machine shop and get them to have a look at it and possibly fix it.

Or...check ebay for a used one.

TMD
