Just replaced water pump with kit complete with housing. Pretty sure everything was put back together correctly but I can't get it to pump water. Does anyone know of a website that I could find an exploded drawing. Is there anything to watch out for with this particular model and year. Ken Cook.com IDs my motor as 1971 , the model is 25102S and the serial # is EO5505.

On your engine, there is a spacer between the water pump housing, and upper exhaust housing. It has an O-ring on each end. Is that spacer there, or in place? Did you use sealer under the impellor plate?

Yes, the spacer is in place it is about 1" ID and about 4inches long. Also used perfect seal for sealer. Is it normal for the pin that fits into the driveshaft and engages the slot on the impeller to ride within about 1/8 of an inch of the impellor plate?

Yes! that pin rides close to the plate. Take the thermostat cover off the head, and see what kind of flow you have. Did you replace, or check the thermostat?

If you are running on muffs or in a barrel it sometimes takes a minute to get the water up through the system and out the pee hole. Did you give it enough time?

Muffs won't work on this one fireman....it has to be in the water or in a drum with the water level well above the lower unit and midsection mate line. Hope that is the case Rabbit.

Don't they make a flushette for those little engines that will work? Used one for years on a 25 hp engine a couple of years older that this one.

I have been testing the engine in a plastic trash can, I was a little suspicious of if the water level was high enough on the midsection to provide enough water. The trash can hits the bottom of the transom clamp bracket and the water is about 4 or 5 inches over the pickup holes near the anti ventilation plate. The water line on the boat seems to be a little higher, judging by the scum line on the hull.

I also forgot to mention that I ran the engine with the water hose connected to the water tube when I had the lower unit off. Engine ran fine and did not overheat If the T-stat was corroded so much it would not open, does this block all water flow to the tell tale on this engine.?

Tempo, the people that make all those plastic fuel tanks, amoung other things makes motor flushers. They do or did make metal ones for outboards. On was for Mercs with the water intake on the underside of the cavitation plate. They had one that fit real old OMC stringer drives (shudder). And they had several that fit the exhaust snout behind the prop that had the intake screen on the front side.
Not sure what they have now,but it might be worth a look.

DHP

Most of the "old style" metaL, spring and clip style flushers are no longer made by TEMPO. I guess the demand has diminish'd over the years!. (I was just looking for an older one). I have never been fond of running a motor in a barrell, no good way to ensure that exhust is not re=entering the in=coming cooling water... If in doubt, run the mtr with out the thermostat housing and thermo install'd should pump plenty of H2O out the top!! Upper water tube grommett can get pinch'd/plug'd off! Remember, when running with a garden hose, you are using water pressure forcing water up into the powerhead, so it's not a true method of saying that it's clear or not!!

The problem is fixed.!!!
I did not put enough sealer on the mating surfaces of the impeller plate and the impeller housing. I knew I had the thing assembled properly. It started pumping water immediately.
Thanks to all who offered their assistance.
Rabbitdawghunter

Bad, bad, bad. It doesn't take "a minute" to get the water flowing. Waiting that long would burn up something for sure. Seeing smoke confirms it's about to burn up... and you're still waiting on water? My water flows within 5 to 10 seconds at the worst case.
