Re: 1971 Glastron Heat Issues
I had a 1972 Glastron V177 Swinger for nearly 2 decades. It had an AQ130C that looked identical to yours (with a 270 outdrive), with the exception that yours has had a little bit of 'homemade' work done to it. I give that engine and drive credit for making me a die-hard Volvo Penta fan.
The first thing I would do is change thermostats.
Since you don't have a lot of history on service other than it was recently 'gone thru', I thought I would share a weird overheating story with you from my AQ130/270 days. I had just changed my exhaust manifold and it kept overheating afterwards. I tried everything and then had that 'Eureka' moment. The gasket I installed at the exhaust manifold was different. The gasket that is CORRECT completely restricts the exhaust flow and except it has a hole (probably 3/4" to 1" in diameter) in it. The WRONG gasket I put in basically only matched the mating surfaces and was 'wide open'. To this day I cannot explain why, but it continually overheated while the wrong gasket was in place. I changed to the one with the hole and it was perfect from that day on. If you can't seem to find any other 'traditional' cause for overheating, take the manifold off and look at the gasket (at this point you will have to change it anyway). Maybe somebody did the same thing I did...
