I've got a 1971 Johnson 50 hp two cylindar outboard. What does the water path look like? Where does it exit at on this motor? When running with the ear muffs on the water intake ports, I get water coming out what looks like a vent hole on the front of the extension shaft and a couple other holes, along with around the lower vibration mount.

There are two vertical, rectangular ports at the base of the engine in the back of the motor. What are these for? I know that the exhaust exits out of the prop, is there where the water is supposed to exit also?

Thanks in advance, I'm new here and new to boat motors. So I'm trying to learn all that I can. The motor came attached to a '71 Crestliner Sea Scout 14' runabout that I'm bought and am working on getting water worthy. Paid only $200 for the boat, motor, and trailer. PLease don't hate me :)

Thanks again!

Seth Petro
Anoka, Minnesota

Re: 1971 Johnson 50hp cooling question

Hi Seth,
I have a 72 Johnson 50 hp on a 1972 MFG Gypsy. Didn't quite get as good a deal as you did, but not too shabby. I'm not all exactly sure about the water path, but what you describes sounds about normal. I'm not sure what all the locations you described are but you're going to have water coming out in several places. Your best bet is to get yourself a maintenance and repair manual for your motor. They have them right here on this site. Anyhow, I just wanted to give you somewhere to start. I'll go start up my engine tomorrow and let you know all the points I get water just for reference. Good luck with your project. My project boat is the Jolly roger listed below, but she's back at home in WA for now while I'm in flight training.

Pat
