Hey, I recently picked up a 1971 mercury 1150 115hp outboard. I've been messing with it because it hasn't been running for awhile. Do these engines have any problems that I should be aware of? It turn's over fine and is getting spark It's getting fuel to the carbs when pumped. I guess the only thing left to check is the fuel pumps and the carbs?

hard to start when cold almost have to flood them with fuel need to make sure choke is working and closing the butteryfly valves and use the the fast idle lever.. may need to spray premixed fuel into the throats of carbs ( you didnt say if you are trying to start)

Shawn, Check the comprssion on all six cylinders. If it is 100PSI+ and within 15% of each other, and you have spark, the rest is easily fixable for small $.

As Chris said, if ya have spark and even cornpression and a decent LU, (check the gear oil), the old inlines are fairly easy and fairly inexpensive to get running. (Internal wirin'; fuel lines; water pump parts still available [right here on iboats]).

JB made a great check list to follow to awaken a sleepin' outboard that I would locate on this forum, (use the search feature), and follow to the letter.

Those old girls are also fairly plentiful in major metro areas, (near bodies of water), so you can pick up parts engines or good runners real cheap.

They don't like salt water so much.

I know I'm biased, (look at me screen name fer a hint :D ), pound fer pound $ fer dollar those inline6s were the best light weight high powered outboard engines ever made, (and they also sold more of 'em then any other engine in history [so I'm not alone in me assessment here]).

If the old girl ya have is in decent shape, and ya get her runnin' properly, her outa the hole to WOT performance will shock ya.

Me over priced $.02. JR
