I recently purchased a boat with a 1971 mercury 1350 outboard 135 hp. When I drain the lower unit oil, I found water. What could this be caused by? Also, where would I find the thermostats? Thanks for the help.

Hi,
No thermostat, and bad seals in the LU. Probably the lower waterpump seals.

------------------
...have fun...corm

cubic inches = power
power = speed
speed = FUN

Email me if you need to.

Hey, fixin up a 1350, how do you refill the lower units oil? Pump it in, or fill from somewhere above???

Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

There's a vent and drain plug on the lower unit. Both located on the same side.

The procedure is as follows: pull the drain plug first. That way the oil won't 'gush' out of the lower unit. Then pull the vent (upper) plug.

To fill reverse the process and fill from the bottom (drain) plug until oil comes out of the upper (vent) plug. Reinstall the vent plug before removing oil source. Then replace drain plug and you're done.

Use marine grade Hi-Vis gear oil. Cheapest I've found is at Wal-Mart for around $3/qt. You'll probably use less than 25 oz to fill. It's also a lot easier, as mentioned, to pump the oil in rather than trying to use squeeze bottles. Small hand pumps which fit in a quart or gallon bottle of gear lube are available at most auto parts stores.

Regarding water in the oil, either driveshaft seals (under the water pump), or shift shaft seals are the likely culprits.

Your 1350 has mild steel driveshaft which will corrode in the seal area, so if you find that to be true you'll have to use Speedi-Sleeves or equivalent (AKA Redi-Sleeve etc) to repair the damaged area. The very thin stainless sleeve is driven over the damaged area and provides a good, smooth surface for the seal to ride upon.

Sleeving is the easiest and cheapest fix, otherwise you're tearing the lower unit apart to either weld-repair the driveshaft or replace (big bucks). At that point it'd probably be cheaper easier to buy a later-model lower unit with stainless driveshaft.

I had a '79 lower unit with swept-back skeg design on my old '71 1350; it worked very well and looked great.

Anyway, HTH and Have Fun with the Mercs.........ed

Cool,
Thanks for the info, in a rush to get a old motor back on the water. I ran it several years ago on a 17' deep v, now putting it on a 30' toon that just stays in the water, no trailer. So, looking to get new oil in her before I mount the motor on the boat. Anything else I should look for or replace? This one only has 50 or so hours on it, & stored inside, nearly perfect.

Make sure the carbs are clean and the iming is set to a MAX advance of 21 degrees. Prop it for a barge too.

-W

Yeah,
Ordered a low pitch torque prop, one for a barge! One more question - Should this be mixed at 50:1 ? I have a really good synthetic tcw - 3 oil, I'll probably use quick silver from here on out. Thanks, Mike.

Ah, found it, 50:1 looks like the ticket. Thanks all, Mike.

Would not hurt to do a decarb and or at least run a little seafoam(Or a good fuel system cleaner) in the fuel to help clean fuel system. Tim

Also save your money, Pennzoil Synthetic Blend @ $9.95 at Wal-Mart is great oil for these old inlines.

-W

Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

Thanks Tim and Clams,
I'll get some good ol seafoam for the motor. It started right up!! I over pumed the gas untill new good fuel was all that was left in it, shot the carbs with carb cleaner, changed the outdrive oil, and bam! It's a great runnin motor, pushes a 30' toon at around 30 MPH!! I have around 4 more gallons on premium synthetic marine 2 cycle oil, after that I'll switch to the penzoil from wally world. It seems to push the boat pretty fast at a idle, I need to put in a tach sooner or later. Should I do any special maintaince like changing a impeller or anything? Thanks for all the help.

Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

Oh yeah, I do have a question. What is a normal amount of water coming out of the "pee" hole? At a idle nothing much comes out, when running at low speeds some steam and spurts of water comes out. At 1/4 throttle and up a good stream of water comes out. I have not heard any overheat alarms, I am assuming it has a alarm! Thanks, Mike.

Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

Impeller should be replaced about every other season with normal use just to be safe. It don't cost much and easy to do. Take care of it and it should be good to you. Good luck, Tim

Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

Well,
I'll just replace it. It doesn't pee all the time, like when going along at 1/6 throttle or so it has spurts of pee & steam. I only ran it like that for a few seconds, made me nervous just cuz I didn't know. Where is the pump impeller, I'll do it in the morning so we can use it this weekend. Thanks, Mike.

Get a manual a easy job with one. You have to drop the lower unit. Tim

Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

If it doesn't pee well at IDLE you must replace the impeller before any use of it.

-W
