Does anyone know how to describe the ignition system . I’m looking for parts but know what to call what I am looking at . Thanks
Thank you for the reply . So if you can’t get parts is the engine shot ? Or is there another ignition option ?Those motors were made by different manufacturers on different years. A lot of them were air cooled Tecumseh engines. They used a coil under the flywheel, with points and a condenser. Vary similar to a lawnmower of that timeframe. it would best be known as a magneto.
I would take it to a lawn mower shop, if you have trouble finding parts. Do those even exist anymore?
They used a Solid state ignition module. There was a replacement module for the points used in the 1970s. Those were green square plastic. They use the magnet on the flywheel as a trigger to fire the coil. I think you still needed the condenser, but not sure.
Those are likely still around in some form.
