My Dad and I have a 1972 Chrysler 130 hp motor it was made in late 1972 and early 1973. This motor has a starter problem. There is a roller clutch inside of the starter bad. The problem is that the parts are obsolete for the starter. The starter is a prestolite and it mounts into the engine. We are wanting to get a new starter for the motor but all were getting is a bosch replacement. The starter is a 3 piece the top middle and bottom are all seperet. I would like to have some web sites or phone numbers to people that might have one.

You could also try ebay they ALWAYS have Chrysler starters up for bids. I got 2 that way. Last one was a brand new 1967 Prestolite.

Re: 1972 130 hp chysler outboard starter help

I have been looking on ebay for a starter. I have purchased a couple of new ones only to find out they are wrong. This starter is a model MGL 4002. Prestolite. It uses the thru bolts that hold the starter together to mount it. The bolts are 1/4" coarse thread, and do not thread into the top starter plate. All of the replacment starters I have seen are made in Twain and have a fine thread bolt that threadeds into the plate on the top of the starter. Would be interested in purchasing a good used one if someone has something.

ANY 3 or 4 cylinder starter from Chrysler, up to at least 1990 Force will be interchangeable. Some of the later Prestolite and Bosch starters are superior because they use permanent magnets for the field and 4 brushes instead of 2 for the armature. They are higher in torque than the earlier motors.

While it is true that some of the earlier models did screw through the block mount, it is not absolutely necessary and it really just makes your life a little more difficult. You can just drill the mounting holes to 1/4 inch and pass the bolts through. (unless, of course you want the engine in stock condition for show) Use self-locking nuts (Nylock) on top. Remember to re-attach the ground wire from the rectifier to one of the bolts if your rectifier had one, and remember to re-attach the lower mount to one of the through bolts and to the block.
