Sounds like you found your problem. The '72 J65 & remote control didn't have a kill switch, so someone added it. While that's actually a good thing to do, if it wasn't wired properly, or isn't a durable switch, you can certainly end up with this problem. I would just bypass it as a test - if all is well when you do this, time to replace the kill switch!
Once you get this issue resolved, don't for get that it would be a good idea to check the charge system, since you had a reverse voltage situation.
