I have a 1972 Evinrude which is leaking lower unit oil out from one of the 2 philip head screws a little above the skeg. There is no oil leaking from either flat head screws where I put fluid in, and the vent. Does anyone know what these "philip head screws" are holding or if this is a big job?

Thank you

If it's the lower phillips than that holds the shift yoke in place, and it is *very* tricky to line it up again without disassembling the lower unit. If I were you, I would loosen the screw about 3/16" but not remove it. Then apply some sealer, like permetex #2, to the exposed threads and retighten.

If you pull the screw out too far then it won't go back in.

Good luck!

Paul,
After taking a closer look, it is one of the attaching screws holding up the gearcase halves it is located directly above the pivot pin screw, facing down.--Also a philips head.
Should I go ahead and use the permatex on this? Is this also holding up gears... ?

Once again thanks for all your help.

Oh, that's good news. Those screws pass into the l/u on the lube side of the cap seal. So they need to be sealed themselves. Just completely remove the screw, clean up the area, and put some sealer in the screw-hole. You'd have to remove all the screws in order to remove the cap (with skeg), so pulling one won't hurt anything. Permatex #2 should work fine.

Good luck!
