Hello everyone,

I think i may have made a mistake buying a second hand evinrude yesterday.

Its a 1972 sportwin 9.5 and its got some major issues.

Its got spark and 70psi compression but its missing the pull starter guts and the lower unit is all cracked up.

Do yall think it would be worth messing with it? The lower unit 'fluid' i got out of it was mostly water.

Well worth doing if you have the patience and know to look for a donor motor for the parts.----Buying new is outrageous coins.

Take it apart first.-------Inspect driveshaft area just above pinion.------Inspect bushing just above pinion.----Inspect gears.-----Water is not kind to these precision gear cases and parts.

compression is fine at 70

check the AOMCI site and post a wanted ad for the missing parts lots of these motors around

of course you may end up paying more for parts than you paid the motor so if you feel like developing a new hobby
lots of folks to help out

I never paid over 70$ cdn for good working ones my best one was $50 see kicker next to 75hp

read Leroy's on the MQ series….

I got it running tonight. The liar i bought it from said the carb was good but i had to clean that out. It runs and shifts pretty well with just a clean carb and fresh fuel.

It has an original cork float, never seen one of those before.

Ive got the lower off and will check inside of it to determine how bad the damage is.

I definitely overpaid lol.

good link they've got lots of older parts.

I did check the ignition and set the points as well. The coils looked alright and the points condenser were newer.

I dont have a points file. Would sandpaper work alright?

AOMCI had a complete 9.5 for sale but no parts. I sent the brazilian connection an email asking about parts as the website didnt list any starters.

Maybe 400/600 grit wet/dry paper. Better choice, though, is some acetone and a matchbook cover. Run it through two or three time to clean. I've used lacquer thinner as well.

I see the recoil starter for the 9.5 listed.----Other years fit.

1964 to 73 i think?

What about the parts for smaller engines 6hp, 7.5hp etc?

The smaller hp ones seem to be easier to find and cheaper.

Well I think this thing is ready to be sold for parts. The lower unit is pretty badly damaged. All the bearings are shot and the shafts are badly worn and scored.

The driveshaft was bad right where the lower pinion bearing rides just like racerone said.

Seems like they should have used needle bearings instead of all these cast in bronze bushings.

Not unexpected.--------They built a lot of these motors !------And they built them very well.----These are precision gearcases ( no shimming ) believe it or not.-----Folks today just do not want to take them to shops for a little maintenance.------The $100 / hr is the reason.-----Back in the day when these motors were new the folks came to a trusted shop ( still in business , same family ) and said.------We would like a " complete check over " and said " thank you " when they picked it up.------Labor was $9.50 / hr and I was getting $2.00 / hr.

Labor was $9.50 / hr and I was getting $2.00 / hr.

At my Dealer, the Labour rate is 145/hr and the Mechanics are getting about 40/hr, so the ratio is not much different.

Back in the Day most people made a lot less, these days most Management are making at least $300/day and certified Trades are still getting about $250/day

Compare the labor rate to the price of a new motor.-----10 hrs shop time is about 1/2 the value of a new motor.-----Back then 10 hrs shop time was 1/4 of the value of a new 9.5 hp motor.------The very reason why shops tend to say ----Not worth fixing that old motor.-------Back in those days there were very few 40 year old outboards that came in looking for repairs.----Lots of those around today !
