So, I'm an idiot. There I said it. Working with my son on his 9.5 Johnson and pulled the pivot pin because I thought it was the lower oil drain.

it wont go back in and I've moved the prop. How much trouble am I in? I am pretty handy, just finished replacing and glassing in the floor of my nitro with a deck extension, but dont have any lower unit experience (obviously).

Thanks for any info!

Peer in the hole and see if you can see the hole in the lever inside, even half of it. If you can, grind or file a flat taper on the end of the pin (like a chisel), then stick the pointy end into the hole and rotate it while gently pushing. It should drag the lever into place and slide right in.

If you can't see it off the bat, you may try lightly moving the shifter forward or reverse also (don't force it), that might move the yolk enough for you to see the hole.

If it is any consolation, you are certainly not the first one to do that. But even if worst comes to worst, you can remove the lower section to fix it is if comes to that. But try some of the suggestions posted here first and work with the situation before going to the removal of the foot section... JMHO!

looking closely, I was able to line this up with a thin nail and then insert the pin.
Even though the motor hadnt run in 15 years( we were told), it fired up and purred like a kitten once it settled down.
Thanks for the Suggestions!!

If it hasn't run for 15 years I would certainly treat it to a new pump impeller.Old and brittle vanes could cause no end of trouble and even lead to a wrecked engine.
