Hey

I have a really good running 9.8. I have changed all the ignition wiring. Isolater blocks. Points "seem" OK. One of the coils was bad and I found a used one. It does not miss and will idle and run all day. Please don't say compression. I don't know and it pulls very hard to start. The prop still has the original paint on it. It sat some where for a long time. I am one my fourth gallon of new fuel through it with over oil and sea foam and it runs better all the time. It is reliable enough that we went scalloping with it today out 3 miles. New lower unit oil, new water pump. Been through the carb to the best of my ability. Set the lower mixture. It needs to be choked cold but will easily start one pull once warmed up. The advance timing screw is all the way out whatever that means.

My question is. This motor has zero blue smoke. In fact no smoke at all. I started pulling skiers 40 years ago and they all smoked somewhat. Having owned diesels for the last 20 years maybe the oil is that much better now?? The problem I am really having is this motor on a very, very light (200pds) 14 foot shallow vee just can't get there. I get to 3/4 throttle after that I am just running out of motor. My son and me 300 pounds and a cooler. I am not talking about going fast but this outboard just seems to not be getting there.

I remember my Dad running a 1959 10 Johnson on almost the identical boat and it was much faster.
