1972 CV-16 with a 1972 140HP Mercury OB...Help please

Hi there... I just picked up a 72 CV-16 with a 1972 Mercury 140HP Outboard. I took her on the lake yesterday and gave her a wet run and brought my GPS out to measure the speed. I only managed 62.3kph. What is the optimum top speed of? this boat/engine under optimum conditions? I have a 19p prop

Also the engine bogs or cuts out after I have the throttle opened for a longer period of time. I have to give the motor a few quick bursts with the throttle to get the engine to respond nicely again... any ideas?

Last question has to do with buying/finding a cover that fits the boat on the original riveted snaps.....where can I find such a beast? Does anyone have one for sale? also need a newer windshield....any ideas?

Prop/Speed Qs require a little more info.I personally don't have a clue what a CV16 is other than a 16 footer.Need boat type,speed,rpm,Aluminum or stainless prop.
I would suspect a fuel supply problem on the bogging.You might try a touch of choke and or squeezing the primer bulb.
If you suspect it may be running lean be careful you could burn a piston.
As far as a matching cover I think a custom cover would be about the only way to go.

This is a 1972 Carlson Glastron Fiberglass Skiboat. It has a 19p Stailess Steel prop and i was taking a GPS reading at around 5000rpm.

Will take your advice to heart regarding the fuel delivery and running lean......

A custom cover looks like the way to go....wish there was one for sale somewhere... I was quoted about $600 for a custom aftermarket...

First I'm not an expert but I have a little info.My aftermarket service manual says the inline 140 hp 6 is designed to run at 5,300 to 5,800 rpm at wot.
"around 5,000 rpm" is a little vague.But indicates you are outside the recomended range.Before doing any prop changes fine tune your trim.
verticle height of the motor is an easy way to gain some speed and rpm.
If you can raise it 1 inch you could gain as much as 2 or 3 mph.Just be sure it pumps water properly.Raise the motor until ventilation becomes a problem.If it is running a little lean that could be reason rpm is low.You may want to do a compression check and get back with your readings.I would think the 19 pitch prop is in the ball park and I wouldn't fiddle until your sure your setup in ideal.
