I have a 1972 Evinrude 100hp with an electric start. Model #100293R. Which color of the two wires do you charge with 12 volts to put the motor in neutral?

Hi Doodlebug
That would be the blue wire.

We tried it. Still no luck putting it in neutral. What do you think the problem could be?

Is the engine running when you try energizing the blue wire. It needs to be. The lower unit has 2 solenoids that direct oil to a pump. Without the pump turning the L/U will not shift. I have tested L/U's with a 3/4" electric drill on the driveshaft.

We can't get the engine to start. It turns over but won't start. What do you think the problem could be?

We took the plugs out and tried to start it. It did go faster but, we didn't try to shift it then. We'll try that tomorrow. Thanks.

That might work, I've never tried it. When I use the drill on the driveshaft I remove the impellor so there is no resistance there.

Guys...I thought the blue wire was reverse and the green was either forward or neutral depending on the year.

The rude 100 is the same as the Johny 100 I have...

When I first got it, it had sat for ages and had no reverse or neutral..

First thing I did, was drain gearcase and filled it with premix.. let it sit for an hour or two..

Then I dropped the leg hooked it to my cordless drill (as someone else mentioned, without the water pump) and gave it a good spin...

Then drained the premix.. flushed it out and put new oil in..

then used cordless drill again..

applied power to both wires. and got reverse..

took one of them off. and got neutral.. (don't remember which wire though.. so try one at a time.)

Once I verified I had neutral and reverse, put it all back together, and its been good since..

hope that helps...

regards

Franki
