Never had to pop the cap of mine but I'm thinking you may be able to wrap a couple of ratchet straps around the hull and connect them towards the center of the boat. This way you could tighten them and pull and hold the sides while you work the cap on from the ends. You would like have to sacrifice the straps since you would have to cut the hooks off since they would not pull through after it is on. Good luck on however you make it happen and looking forward to seeing it back together.

Thinking about it a little more, I think if you hook both ratchet ends together at the middle of the boat, you may not even have to cut the hooks off ..... you should be able to pull the end without a hook through the ratchet and then through the gap between the hull and cap.

Well that worked!

I also inserted a piece of 1x3 pine at the tip of the bow. This allowed me to do the stern first, then the sides all the way up to the bow before I had to pull the pine out. Pop!

I reinstalled the cap at this stage because I was concerned the cap would not fit due to the position the transom was in when I installed the new one (left no wiggle room when the epoxy dried). But if
fits!

So now I'll remove the cap again, and replace the stringers.

Still waiting for my 4x12 sheet of coosa board though. I ordered it over a week ago

Should one layer of 1708/epoxy be enough for the stringers?

I'm using 3/4" coosa board.

Got some work done on the boat yesterday. What a beautiful day.

Coosa board was delivered last Wednesday.

Making a template for a stringer with pine first.

Traced and ready to cut

Happy with the template.. time to start cutting into the coosa board.

First, had to patch a small hole created from cutting out the old stringer.

Nice to see new pieces going into the boat vs taking material away

Bedded with marine PL glue. Tomorrow's suppose to rain so hopefully Monday I can get this glassed in.

My honeycomb sheets for the floor were delivered. 3 4x8 sheets with a total weight of 20lbs. I'm really happy with the product so far and I think it'll work well.

Since I'll be using flotation foam which well help support the floor, I don't think I'll have to glass the bottom, and just wetting it with epoxy will suffice.

Steps:

1. Cut the sheet to fit the section of the floor I'm working on
2. Climb in the boat with the sheet.
3. Wet the bottom with epoxy
4. Place the piece
5. Epoxy and glass the top

This may change during my usual staring at the boat while sipping my coffee brainstorming sessions.

Annnnnd...i swore I took more pics as I was installing the floor... guess not. I took the cap off again to get the back floor pieces installed. I also have to tab the rest of the transom in so the cap had to come off anyways.

Looks great so far! I actually found your post while searching for posts on my V-173, difference is mine is a 1978 17ft bow-rider made by Imperial. Any idea why they'd use the same model number? A lot of the pics of yours look the same as mine, especially the rear area.

Well it's been a while, but we got enough done on the boat to launch it this past July 4th. Here's some pics:

Epoxied in pieces to copy the original flotation boxes. I'm not actually making boxes here for foam. I'm just adding more support for the transom

Installed new seats. I did *not* screw the seats to the floor. I ran small strips of glass over the cross members and expoxied it to the floor. After the seats were installed I primed the floor.
