Is there an aftermarket coil for these motors.I have seen several coils but am a little hesitant because I know some motors used multiple coils for there design and mine only uses one and didnt want to buy one that cant keep up the juice it needs to fire.I looked at several here at iboats but unfortunatly they dont go back far enough for my serial number 3182882. Not sure if there is anything wrong with mine besides the fact that on the bottom there is a carbon block that has a wire winding on it that is cracked. Anyway be nice to get rid of that big ol orange coil that takes up space for good air lol...

You can't replace the 'big ol coil' with the newer small ones.... You're stuck with that one.... Use a DVA to test it. If it needs replacing, then you need to replace it with the right one....

Then let me ask this question why does the 85 horse with the distributor setup just like mine ( Identical ) use the smaller one?

Merc changed the coil 3 times on the inlines and the last is the small coil part # 332-4895. This was offered as kit in the late 80's to replace the larger coils....
