No, but if your lower unit is too low in the water, it will throw up a splash. Where is your cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of the hull? Even, Below, Above??

buy new... i have an older tilt and the pump is mounted to the tilt in the water !!!how stupid!!!... i have however relocated it inside the boat and works fine... alot better than having to pull that pin out all the time.... its worth it... and thanks for the info... i'll go measure it and see what i come up with and let u know thanks....

In regards to the water splashing up, would you consider it to be more significant than the spray shown in this image?

My motor happens to be a 1972 1150 similar to yours. I have questioned the spray on a few forums recently only to receive a response indicating that it is 'normal' spray for an inline Merc of that vintage. Like yours, my motor is mounted about an inch above the bottom of the vee. I tried raising it another inch and a half with very little improvement. From what I am told, it is a characteristic vee pattern spray coming from the leading edge of the lower unit.

You also mentioned that your motor 'struggles' to get up on plane. Have you reviewed the boat weight, engine rpm, and prop pitch to check if you are lugging the motor? What size/pitch prop, and what type of boat are you running?

the little tab can be bought as a metal or a zinc (zinc in salt water). it balances the torque of the prop...you dont need it if your fresh water and you dont have trouble steering the boat.

When you say it has trouble getting up to speed, is the motor sputtering, or is it running smoothly and the boat just isnt popping up?

my '78 1150 sprays like your description. Im pretty sure its just the design of the lower unit.
