1973 65hp controls Question!!

hello folks, been a while since I've visited, but glad to be back.
My issue is I've got 1963 40hp big twin rude on my 17' bayliner. I'm going to be installing a 1973 65hp rude. I need to know if the control cables will fit the 65hp engine. The 40hp has twin lever controls standard for that year. The 65hp came with a power pilot control(no tilt) box but no cables( although the box will need replacing the harness is in decent shape). Just trying to get controls hooked up without spending too much.

to be honest, i have a 1987 50 hp, connected with a 50's version controller. you have to dash mount the ignition, horn and i used a push button as a neutral switch. you have to push it and turn the key to start the motor, (a reminder to put it in neutral. you can also pick up another control on ebay. the shift and throttles cables are the same for both your motors.

You need to determine exactly which engine you have. If it is a 1973, its not a 65hp and if its a 65hp with a thru-the-hub exhaust, its a 1972. There is more than a casual reason why its important to know this, because the 1972 motor is a hydroelectric shift and the 1973 is a mechanical shift - the control boxes for each are very different.

Its also important to know if the older 40hp is electric or mechanical shift. The best scenario is for both the older motor and the newer one to be mechanical shift. In that case, your old controls will work. Conversely, if the older motor is electric shift and the newer one is mechanical, or the old one is electric and the newer one is hydroelectric, the swap won't work in the first case and I don't think it will in the second.

Try to find a model number on the motor that you think is a 65hp and report back - we can give you more help once we know for sure what you have. It wouldn't be a bad idea to do the same on the old 40hp too.

Thanks for all the help folks. The 65hp is model#65373r. I know for sure it's a 1973 as an old outboard mechanic ran the numbers for me. It is mechanical shift as is the 40hp. The cable mounting areas on the 65 look a lot like the ones on the 40. I did test fit another set of cables on a simplex box and the seem to be adaptable. I'm missing part of the hardware for the shifter cable on the engine side. Don't have the 40hp model# at the moment but all the advice here and with my own samples I think the cable will work. I'd forgotten about the extra cables I had and decided to test fit to see what worked. My box is exactly like the one pictured in the previous post. Thanks a lot guys. You caught me slacking - you are right in that your motor is a 1973 Evinrude. I had been under the impression that the 73 motor went to 70 hp. That's what I get for making statements from memory rather than looking things up. My bad.

If you have a control like the one in TD's pic, you should be fine. New control cables aren't terribly expensive but be sure that you get the type with the set screws on the end fittings because the press fit type do not work with that control as far as I know. The later Evinrude Simplex/Johnson Shipmaster controls came in both the set screw type and the press fit type.
