Hi All,

I am a first time member and first time boat owner. I recently bought a 1973 Browning Monterrey w/ Berkley 455 Jet Drive for $1000. Supposedly the engine was rebuilt and they installed a new carburetor. The first thing I would like to do is restore the inside of the boat. The seats and vinyl trim inside the boat are weathered but not torn. The engine box needs to be rebuilt, so any ideas on how to do that would be much appreciated. Building the box would be simple, it's just putting the vinyl on and installing cup holders is a little tricky to me. Also, the floor boards are rotting out by the engine. So I need to replace the floor. I will be picking up some marine board from Menard's in the next couple days, but I have never done this before, so any tips on how to do this would be awesome. Please help! Here are some pictures of the inside:

Thanks!

Still new to the forum. I am trying to look for Inboard engine cover threads on how to build one. Any tips, links, or sites would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, I've officially started. Just started the ripping n tearing process. Got rid of all the seats and tore up the carpet. I also got the motor running which is a plus. Now I have confidence in restoring boat. I just ordered 3 4x8 sheets of Marine Plywood from Menard's. That stuff doesn't come cheap, so hopefully I don't mess up my cuts! I don't need to replace the floor on the bow because its all fiberglass. I only need to worry about the back.

Welcome iboats!!!!

Have been following along. Seems kind of lonely in here so thought I'd at least say hi to a fellow Iowan. :D

Glad to hear you got her running that's a definite plus. From the looks of it most of the bow floor is hull but there should be a bit of wood up there. I'd say making sure you replace it all while your there beats coming back and wishing you had.

You should read through as many other fiberglass restorations on here as you can, they'll give you a very good idea of what to do and how to do it.

You've probably got some waterlogged foam in there that needs to be removed, and there's a real good chance your stringers and transom are rotten too.

If you do this resto right it's going to take quite a bit of time and money, but when you're finished you'll have a like new hot rod jet boat with a Hugh Jass motor.

If you haven't looked at this thread yet, I suggest you read it from start to finish.

Keep updating this thread with progress and pics, as others see you are determined to complete this project and do it right they'll start chiming in.

Thanks for posting fellas. I was starting to wonder if anyone was out there! Here's a pic of the transom which I think is in great shape:

So, I ripped up the carpet and this is what I found:

Since this is an older boat and I don't have the time or tools to do a complete overhaul, I didn't replace the stringers entirely. So I went with this repair method:

Re: 1973 Browning Monterrey Restoration

I used 1x6's on each side of the stingers and attached them with woods screws and PL Adhesive. These Stringers are solid. I don't think I will have a problem:

I am also going to put spray foam in between the stringers and need to repair a small hole in the bottom of the hull before I do that.

..more pics to come

Uhmmm, Turner24, your "sistering" in of your stringers is an acceptable method as long as the stringers you are sistering into are all dry and solid. I assume this is the case. Did you drill into the Transom to confrim it was solid and sound? Did your drill into the stringers to confirm they were solid and dry? You are going to cover the stringers and all exposed wood with CSM and 1708 biax cloth right??? The first link in my signature below has drawings and info on how to do all the glass work you will need to be doing. You should not use the Foam in a Can in your boat. It will absorb water and it is very expensive compared to the pour in foam you can buy for boats. Or you can use the pink or blue sheet foam from Lowes or HD and cut it to fit between the stringers.
