1973 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5

I'm looking for some expert advice on an outboard I just aquired for my Jon boat. It's a 1973 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5. This motor was left outside in the dirt and weeds for years but amazingly enough, everything under the cover looks great! (aside from the wasp nests) It's the outside I have questions about. I'm going for a total restore which means I need to re-paint and replace some faded and dry rotted items. Of course the items I need are what everyone and their Uncle needs so everywhere I look, these part are obsolete and unavailable. I know I'm not the only guy with this problem so I'm looking for ideas on where to look for these items or how to use something else to replace them.
Here is what I need for now... Motor cover sear, slow speed adjusting knob and a decal set.
Yes, I can get by without these items but I'm the kinda guy that has to have everything just right. Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. This motor came with a tiller handle and a steering control bracket. I have removed the bracket. Is there a market for these and if so what are they worth?

for the motor cover gasket I used a truck window seal cut to fit , glued in using 3m weather stripping glue, slow speed adjusting nob go to any boat junk yard, they will have something that will work. but first go to the top secret files and do some good not taking, this site will set you up for success .

jmo, but do a compression test before you spend a nickel on the motor. post back with numbers. and welcome to iboats forums!!

Thanks for the friendly welcome! I don't have an engine compression test gauge but I think I can get my hands on one and report my findings. Now, I'm having trouble pulling the fly wheel. I guess I'll have to ask around for a puller as I'm only getting a spark from 1 plug.
It's 103 degrees in the shade here but I'd still rather be in the garage tinkering with this old motor than sitting on the couch in the AC!

I borrowed a harmonic balancer puller and a compression testing kit from the local O'reilly's Auto but the compression tester turned out to be broken and that' the only one they had! The puller worked like a charm. Anyway, while I wait for them to have one sent from another store, I put my fingertip in each of the spark plug holes and had a buddy pull the starter. The pressure from the engine pushed my finger out with pretty good pressure from each one. At least I know it has some compression. What kind of numbers am I looking for? I read somewhere on here that I need at least 70.

Hope you gave those cylinders a bit of oil prior to pulling the starter. I would say anything over 60 and within 10% of one another. we had a fellow who said he was getting 30 a cylinder last week and his motor was running! I do agree with the previous poster. I only ever spend enough to get the compression numbers and then make an educated guess from them if the engine is worth while, and they usually are I should add. To test, pull both plugs and hook up the tester to the upper cylinder. Keep pulling (and counting pulls) until the gauge stops climbing. Write down the number. Repeat on the lower with the same number of pulls and write down the number. Best of luck. Rick.

Success! The motor started after being stored outside for years. I replaced the ignition coils and spark plugs, rebuilt the fuel pump and carb and it started up on the third pull! It keeps dieing if I let it idle but I hope thats just some minor adjustments. Thanks to all for your help. Leeroysramblings.com helped a lot too.
