I bought a 1973 Johnson 65. I cleaned the carbs last year (it had been sitting up a while) and run it the whole summer. I decided to soak & put in 3 carb kits, three new spark plugs, & new fuel lines. Now it runs out of the water OK, and I can see fuel going into all 3 carbs, but when I put it in the water cranks OK, engage the shifter and it dies, repeatedly. I can hear the carbs spit occationally. Acts like it is bogging down. Very frustrating

kennycat,

You cannot effectively set the idle while running on the muffs. The engine needs backpressure (water) on the exhaust system to run correctly.

This may be as simple as setting the idle while the lower unit is SUBMERGED in water.
