1973 Mercury 200 20 H.P.

Can anyone tell me where i can get a replacement stop button? I have one with like a 10 foot wire connection that has dry rotted and the piece that screws to the engine is the only thing pretty much left. The only problem is, is that the wires broke off down in the piece so i can't get to them. Can anyone tell me where i can get one i have searched the net thru and thru. Or any suggestions on rigging some kind of stop button up. Any directions would help. Thanks

You can buy one off ebay.

or you can buy one new from Mercury (only thing is all the new ones that I have seen are orange? go figure)

Or if your rubber cover on the exterior is still good but the wires are rotted off, you can unscrew the stop switch from the inside (plastic nut), pull the stop switch off. Then pull the rubber cover off, punch out the 2 copper rivet looking inserts from inside where the wires connect. Drill out the old wires and solder new wires into the inserts and then reassemble.

A '73 20hp stop switch is normally open and closes to ground to kill the spark.

so if i took just a normal everyday toggle switch and cut the wire off of the button that is there and connect it to the on side of the toggle switch then take a short piece of wire and connect from the off side of the toggle to a place grounded well on the motor it should cut it off when in the off position correct?

If you ground the wire coming from the stator connection, then you kill the spark. Lots of ways to do that.

can some one give me a idea how to connect the kill button on a 1970 20 hp merc i have a two wire button please help me a schematic
