Re: 1973 Starcraft Holiday - To Gluvit or not to Gluvit

I recently had my boat out on Lake Huron so I had both of my 6 gallon portable tanks full(not a good lake to be stranded on) and she was sitting lower in the stern than I'd like.

It's always easy to move the extra tank to the bow but then it's in the way.

I plan on moving my big deep cycle to the bow to balance it out a bit. Removing weight from the back and adding it to the front makes a huge difference.

Keep in mind that the glass mat AGM batteries handle the bouncing of a boat much better, I am going to get one if I store it permanently in the bow.

Looking forward to the photos:)

:confused::confused:
Went to the local West Marine to pick up some fogging oil for winterization and one of the guys working there insisted that I should get antifreeze. I was under the impression that the 1987 Evinrude Special 48hp was self draining, but the guy made at least a decent argument, that "you can never get all the water out of there"...and said I should get antifreeze and run it through the lines to protect the water line, etc... Nonetheless, I have a feeling he is wrong about putting antifreeze in there. Any thoughts?

CFM, you can't blame the guy for trying to make a sell:D Just fog the carbs, put some gas treatment in the tank and run it into the carb bowls. Make sure the motor is upright and it'll be fine. Any water you have in it will drain out or you can crank it a couple times if you want to push any extra water out. Thats all I do, never had a problem.
Is this the same store that never heard of Gluvit and said to use silicone on aluminum??? LOL

Right! That's what I figured...just trying to make a sell. Someone told me that he likes to run the carbs dry (take the fuel line out, etc...), but that always seemed to me a bit hard to coordinate with fogging the thing. What are your thoughts on that?

Opinions are varied on that, particularly for multi-cylinder engines. Cuz you know ones going to be running dry for at least a little bit. "Running" dry and draining them are two different things. Personally I'd just run some Stabil through the last tank and call it a day. I have never done anything to winterize other than change the lower unit oil and haven't had any issues.

On an OB, no gas = no oil :eek: I would not suggest you run the motor for that reason. EZ has the best solution, Stabil. :D

Hey guys...well it is getting to be that time again when working on the boat is possible. Got a new camera (a digital one), and looking to get a scanner so I can get all those pictures I promised you guys online. Believe, I think you guys are gonna like it...I did some stuff that is a little unconventional, but hopefully in a good way. See what you guys think in a month or so.

Anyhow, I was wondering, what do you guys think is the best way to go about cleats, and a general cleat setup on this kind of closed bowed Holiday (15 foot). I would think that the anchor line should go straight in front of the boat. But, with the bow light, that seems impossible. Any ideas on a design on how I should rig cleats on the boat, and how an anchor line off the front would work on this boat. Thanks.
