Hi Forum!

I took the engine out of my boat to do a deck and transom rebuild. The engine is a straight 6, 165 hp, 1974. Since the engine is out of the boat, I would like to give it some TLC. Aside from cleaning and painting does anyone have any advice on what to replace now while it is out? The compression is good and within tolerance of all cylinders. I was thinking of redoing most of the wiring cause the wires look pretty corroded.

Some specific items I have questions about;

First the engine says leaded fuel only, can I use unleaded fuel? I used regular un-leaded to compression test it.

Second; what type of engine paint and where to purchase

As usually many thanks for the advice to all the experience in the forum and iboats!

Huh,..??

Compression tests are done by crankin' the motor on the starter, with All the sparkplugs out...

Ayuh,.... Rustoleum black, from 'bout any hardware store...

Yeah good call my mistake, I did the compression test with plugs out, but ran it for a little while prior to purchase with unleaded.

I did a search about the fuel type and I have a good knowledge base now. BTW I remember my thermodynamics teacher saying something like the lead helped to reduce the engine knocking.

This is the first engine I have ever had out of something. I am pretty good when it comes to working on things, but like I said this is my first time taking apart an engine. I am sure I can remove the head, with a little patience and the internet. Are their any cascading effects of having the seats replaced such as needing news seals somewhere?

Hey there, I have the same engine but a 71 model. The guy here are a wealth of knowledge. What I am doing with my engine is:

1. Replacing the Fuel pump to the newer one - See post Electric fuel pump and Fishermark user,
2. Water Reversal Kit - This reverses the water flow throught the Exhaust Manifold so as to stop the possiable manifold cracking between #2 and #3 cyclinders from a hot spot.
3. Running Un-leaded fuel with good quality lead aditive - My engine runs fine.
4. Check all fuel lines, electrical etc and replace as required.
5. Carbie kit - does wonders for it.
6. Tuneup kit - Points, condensor, plugs, leads etc
7. check and replace as required throttle and selector cables.
8. Check fan belt and replace if required plus keep one or two attached to the motor so if one breaks you already have one in place to replace it with.

I think that is all but if in a doubt just ask the guys are they are great.
