1974 85hp Mercury lower unit (help)

I am looking for help troubleshooting my lower unit problems. I just bought a boat w/ an 85hp mercury(1974) and the lower unit will not engage. The cable in the upper unit is good and is engaging the lower unit at the top of the motor, but nothing is happening in the lower unit.I was wondering if there is anything else to check before I pull the lower unit.

I'm not real familiar with that engine, but try disconnecting the shift cable and see if it will shift into gear moving the shift lever by hand.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty
