I have a 9.9 evinrude 1974, there does not seem to be a tell tale. Does this year model come with one, there is two pipe plugs below lower cowl rear.

Started putting them in around '78. Just watch for a little spitting out the exhaust relief port just under the cowl.

Does it have a screw up near the lower cowl that says "flush" ? Right next to that is a little hole ....that is your tell tale hole. These get plugged super easy so take a wire that fits and stick it in, while running if you can and twist it around,in and out, till water comes out.

Whoops, when I posted, I thought I was on the Merc forum. Never mind my advice.

The OMC 9.9s did not have a tell tale as we kmow it until 1977. Go back to the "Frequently Asked Questions" section & there I have a link to many complete articles describing these motors.

No, these are pipe plugs, they are just under the cowl latch(Rear). The rear most plug is in and the one on the left side is about 60 degrees from the one mounted straight back they are at the same level. Some water does come out if I close off the hole partially the water does go to a stream. These plugs are drilled and tapped into the exhaust extension housing. On later models this is where the exhaust exits, like on a 1985 model.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload up to 5 directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format. 640x480 max.
