Hello,

I have a 1974 Evenrude 70HP that starts right up every time.
When I shut the engine off after running for a while it will not start back up. It is getting gas, starter runs, but will not turn over.

Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: 1974 Evenrude 70HP fails on restart

You say that the starter runs but will not turn over.

Are you saying that the starter is spinning and that the bendix gear isn't engaging the flywheel..... or the starter bendix spins and engages the flywheel and the engine will not crank over..... or that the starter spins and engages the flywheel and the engine cranks over but will not fire and run?

If the engine cranks over normally but will not fire when hot, but will start fine when cold, I'd suspect the stator under the flywheel. If it is cracked and/or leaking a sticky substance down on the timer base and powerhead, replace it.

When this takes place, remove the spark plugs and check for spark that will jump a 7/16" gap. If no spark, disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine, then check the spark again. If still no spark, suspect the stator. However if you now have the proper spark, that usually indicates a failing ignition switch.

Let us know what you find.
